『半旗』とは、弔意を表すために旗竿の先端から半分ほど下げて掲げる旗のことです。
英語では、これを flag at half-mast (または half-staff) と言うそうです。
mast やstaff が『旗竿』の意味になります。
また、『半旗を掲げる』は、fly (hoist) a flag at half-mast のようになります。
fly は『飛ぶ、飛ばす』の意味の他に、この場合のように他動詞として『(旗を)掲げる』の意味でも使われます。
また、hoist は『(旗を)掲げる』や『(ロープなどで）巻き上げる、釣り上げる』の意味の動詞です。
2024年1月6日、熊谷ラグビー場でのベルブリッツとワイルドナイツの試合では、
リーグ旗と両チームの旗が半旗として掲げられていました。
1月1日に起きた能登地震の被害者に対する弔意を表すためと思われます。
On January 6, 2024, at the game between the Bell Blitz and the Wild Knights at the Kumagaya Rugby stadium, the flags of the league and the both teams were flown at half-mast.
This was supposedly to express condolences for the victims of the Noto earthquake that occurred on January 1.
