The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a megaquake advisory after Thursday’s quake, as part of the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information protocol. It has also lifted all tsunami advisories.
Nankai Trough Earthquake 『

また、『半旗を掲げる』は、fly (hoist) a flag at half-mast のようになります。

On January 6, 2024, at the game between the Bell Blitz and the Wild Knights at the Kumagaya Rugby stadium, the flags of the league and the both teams were flown at half-mast.
This was supposedly to express condolences for the victims of the Noto earthquake that occurred on January 1.

The New York Times may not understand that the Japanese seismic intensity differs from the magnitude on the Richter scale.
Their article said ’The earthquake registered 7.6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale…’, but in fact, the maximum seismic intensity was 7 and the Richter scale magnitude was 7.6. They seem to confuse the two.

’corruption led to corner-cutting’

英語でも sink like a stone (rock, brick)のような表現が有ります。

Large amounts of swimming stones from the volcano are covering the sea surface, affecting fishing.
