『遺族』は英語では bereaved family と言うそうです。
今日は終戦の日です。
英字紙 The Mainichの記事に、77回目になる戦没者記念式典での戦争遺族の方のスピーチの内容が載っており、bereaved families という言葉が使われていました。
Kenichi Otsuki, the 83-year-old representative of relatives of the war dead, said in a speech that the world is still witnessing bereaved families in conflicts such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
戦没者遺族代表の大月健一さん（83歳）はスピーチで、世界は今もロシアのウクライナ侵攻などの紛争で生じる遺族を目撃し続けていると指摘しました。
“We have to recognize again that war is not something in the distant past but something close to us,” said Otsuki, who lost his father in China, pledging to continue to pass down the tragedy of war and the preciousness of peace to future generations.
中国で父を亡くした大月さんは、「戦争は遠い過去のものではなく、身近なものであることを再認識しなければなりません」と語り、戦争の悲惨さ、平和の尊さを後世に伝え続けることを誓っていました。
遺族 bereaved familyの bereavedは『肉親に先立たれた、あとに残された』の意味の形容詞で、この元となる動詞の bereave は、事故などが人から『（肉親などを）奪う』の意味だそうです。
確かに戦争が人の命を奪っているのでしょうが、それを始めて続ける決断をしている人に責任があると思います。
