今日3/20は春分の日で祝日ですね。
『春分』は英語で vernal equinox と言います。
vernal が『春の』で、spring equinox でも同じ意味です。
equinox を辞書で引くと『昼夜平時、分点』等と出てきます。昼と夜が同じ長さになるタイミングのことで、そういう時が1年で春と秋の2回あるわけです。

Cambridge dictionary によると vernal equinoxは
the time in the spring when the sun crosses the equator, and when night and day are of equal length
(春に太陽が赤道を横切る時であり、夜と昼が同じ長さになる時)
という説明になります。
