英語で『骨髄移植』のことを何と言うでしょうか？
『骨髄』は bone marrow と言います。
このmarrow には『髄、真髄、核心、活力』の意味が有り、これだけでも『骨髄』の意味にもなります。
『移植』はtransplant や transplantation なので、
『骨髄移植』は bone marrow transplantation (transplant) と呼ばれ、BMT と略されるようです。
mayoclinic.org のサイトでの説明では
A bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into your body to replace bone marrow that’s not producing enough healthy blood cells. A bone marrow transplant is also called a stem cell transplant.
「骨髄移植は、健康な血液細胞を十分に産生できない骨髄の代わりに、健康な造血幹細胞を体内に注入する治療法です。骨髄移植は幹細胞移植とも呼ばれます。」
となっています。
白血病などの治療法ですね。
こういう医療で多くの人を救うには、ドナーの確保が必要になります。
最終的にはドナー個人の善意に頼るところが有りますが、提供する際の負担やリスクを最低限にするなど公的な支援や仕組みが重要と思われます。
