ラグビーの中継で解説を聞いていると、
オープンサイド（Open side）とかブラインドサイド（Blind side）という言葉が出てきます。
Open sideのCambridge Dictionary での説明は
in rugby, the side of the scrum (= the group of players from each team who come together with their heads down and arms joined, and push against each other, trying to take control of the ball) that is furthest from the edge of the playing area:
となっています。これを訳すと
「ラグビーにおいて、スクラム（＝両チームの選手たちが頭を下げて腕を組んで集まり、互いに押し合いながらボールの支配権を奪い合う行為）の際、プレーエリアの端から最も離れた位置にある側」ということです。
Blind side はこの反対で、同辞書の説明では
in rugby, the side of the scrum (= a group of players from each team who come together with their heads down and arms joined, and push against each other, trying to take control of the ball) that is closest to the edge of the playing area:
「ラグビーにおいて、スクラム（–重複するので略–）の際、プレーエリアの端から最も近い位置にある側」となっています。
要するに、
ラグビーのフィールド内でスクラム（やラック）の位置からサイドのタッチラインまでが広い側を Open side 、狭い側を Blind side と呼ぶわけですね。
また、ラグビーでは、一般にフォワードの背番号6の選手がブラインドサイドフランカー(Blind-side Flanker)、背番号7の選手がオープンサイドフランカー (Open-side Flanker )と呼ばれます。広いオープンサイドと狭いブラインドサイドで、選手に求められる役割が異なるため、適性に応じて担当しているわけです。
