The New York Times may not understand that the Japanese seismic intensity differs from the magnitude on the Richter scale.

Their article said ’The earthquake registered 7.6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale…’, but in fact, the maximum seismic intensity was 7 and the Richter scale magnitude was 7.6. They seem to confuse the two.
