パリオリンピックの近代五種で、佐藤大宗選手が銀メダルを取りましたね。
この種目で日本人初のメダル獲得だそうです。🎉
この『近代五種』は英語では、modern pentathlon と言います。
pentathlon が『五種競技』の意味です。
The American Heritage dictionary の modern pentathlon の説明は以下の通りです。
An athletic contest first held at the 1912 Olympics in which each participant competes in five events (running, swimming, horseback riding, fencing, and pistol shooting), with the running and shooting events now combined as a single event.
これを訳すと
「近代五種とは、1912年のオリンピックで初めて開催された種目で、ランニング、水泳、乗馬、フェンシング、ピストル射撃の5種目からなる競技で、現在はランニングと射撃は組み合わせた1種目となっている。」
のようになります。
